This course emphasises the practical communicative use of language, teaching the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. A selection of themes are covered from the following: Shops and shopping, buying snacks and food for picnics, sport and leisure activities, arranging to go out/transport, clothes, describing appearance, describing where places are, travelling by train. Students have the opportunity to use more than one tense in their work.
Assessments take place in lessons throughout the year through the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The topic of food and drink is assessed through speaking and writing in October. The topic of clothes is assessed through listening and writing in late January/early February. The topic of holidays is assessed through reading in May. The topic of travelling by train is assessed through speaking in late June/early July. One homework project is set during Year 8, during the week beginning 22nd October. This provides the opportunity for students to work independently and to do their own research. The project is to produce a written, illustrated account of the meals eaten during a day. The learning of vocabulary is regularly set as homework.
It would be useful if each student has access to a bilingual French dictionary at home and/or access to the Internet. The Online Collins French dictionary is useful, Google Translator is not! There are several websites that can be used for extra practice and reinforcement of new topics and new vocabulary. All these can be found by following the links from Moodle. All Year 8 students have the opportunity to participate in our annual day trip to Boulogne at the end of the summer term.
