Topics Covered

Autumn Term – Outsiders: In this unit, students use a modern novel and a range of fictional extracts and non-fiction texts to explore different marginal positions in society.
Spring Term – Crime and Punishment: In this unit students will explore issues surrounding crime and punishment.  They will analyse a Romeo and Juliet as well as creating non-fiction texts on this topic in addition to developing their speaking and listening skills.
Summer Term – Narratives: In this unit, students will analyse a range of different narrative styles and genres as well as creating narratives of their own.  They will consider the idea of ‘voice’ and explore the world through a range of different perspectives.

A- Level English Literature – Texts in Shared Contexts
 
Students spend a large part of the year working on their non-examination assessments independently with guidance from their teacher.  Alongside this, they will study A Streetcar Named Desire, Feminine Gospels and The Handmaid’s Tale.
 
A-Level English Language 
 
Students spend a large part of the year working on their non-examination assessments independently with guidance from their teacher.  Alongside this, they will study how language has changed over time and Child Language Acquisition.

English Literature
We use AQA Specification A examination board.
Component 1 – Love through the Ages – 3 hour exam – 40%
Component 2 (option 2B) – Modern times: literature from 1945 to the present day – 2 1/2 hour exam – 40%
Component 3 – non-examination assessment – 20%
English Language
We use OCR examination board.
Component 1 – Exploring language – 2 1/2 hour exam – 40%
Component 2 – Dimensions of linguistic variation – 2 /12 hour exam 40%
Component 3 – non-examination assessment – 20%
